Hi! I’m J-R Campion, Coaching Director and Sports Performance Specialist at Vortex Performance Sports.

I am based in Double Bay, Sydney, where I have a Sports Performance Testing studio.

A certified USAT triathlon coach and certified F.I.S.T bike fitter since 2006, I have also coached multi-sport fitness training as
well as endurance running freelance for ten years.

I am also a Certified ChiRunning /Walking instructor, ambassador for developing ChiRunning and ChiWalking in Australia.

I have decided to concentrate on making Sports Performance Vo2 Max and Metabolic rate Testing as well as accurate Cycling Analysis within the reach (financially and by holding regular events) to all Cyclists, Triathletes and others cycling and sport enthusiasts. My main concentration in Cycling analysis is to give the means to cyclists and triathletes better develop their potential on the bike.

Using your own bike on the Racermate© Pro-lab Computrainer unit, in quest of that perfect energy efficient cycling form, the Computrainer Pedal Stroke Spin Scan monitors your power output at every 15 degrees of your pedal stroke, left leg and right leg power output balance, overall pedalling efficiency, average torque angle for each leg, wattage, cadence, speed, and heart rate at the same time, at any one point in time of the 360 degree rotation.

This data allows for a bio-mechanical correct and energy efficient posture and essential aero dynamic harmony with your bike to be fined tuned, as well as your pedalling form, while monitoring the effects of the changes as they relate to power, efficiency and metabolic cost.

Any cycling deficiencies, due to conflicting or wrong information learnt over the years, including incorrect pedal cleat position, posture and other issues, will, through the real time transfer of the cyclists pedal stroke and posture be indicated on the computer screen, via the Computrainer software. Pertinent and appropriate advise will be given through the analysis of this data using my cycling and coaching experience from analyzing cyclists in this manner.

Making the cyclist aware of any deficiencies and helping them correct these issues, will make him or her a more efficient, aerodynamic cyclist. The results are better performances through less fatigue due to a bio-mechanical correct posture and energy efficient pedal stroke. This also helps injury prevention. Small changes in position or posture have proven to sometimes show large improvements in performance. Only the Computrainer can accurately illustrate what is the output of your efforts in to the bike.

Sports performance testing for athletes is a second field in which concentrate my knowledge. The data resulting from the Korr© Cardiocoach VO2 max and Metabolic rate testing unit correctly analyzed, indicates areas for developing an athletes potential. Knowing your exact Lactate Threshold, Peak Vo2 rate, and exact, unique heart rate zones through the medically calibrated VO2 max unit is essential information. With this precise data at hand, you can optimize your training and racing using a heart rate monitor. It also indicates your exact calorie output at the different intensities; essential information to avoid bonking due to lack of nutrition management on the bike.

Such precise information avoids relying on hand-down incorrect methods such as the 220 minus age, or with age estimate charts or Polar’s (or other) “own zones” method, which are just generalizations and very inaccurate. Training with those bases has you more than likely training in the wrong zones and wasting your precious training time.

Remember, each athlete is different. With accurate, personal heart rate training zones you will be getting the most out of your training sessions and getting the edge on the competition.

Knowing your own L.T and Vo2 Max/Peak capacity also gives you a benchmark on which to track your performance. The athlete can see the progress being made, and adjust accordingly the new heart rate zones.

Using the Computrainer for power (watt) training, and obtaining his or her own Functional Threshold Power (F.T.P) level is also another valuable performance testing tool. Carrying out the F.T.P test to find out ones Functional Threshold Power, and using watts as a measuring unit, is another way of training to develop cycling potential and efficiency.

Effecting regular training sessions on the Computrainer Pro-Lab is an ideal way to train using power, in a controlled environment. This allows for accurate and precise training/coaching sessions with the athletes bike on the Computrainer. The precise advise of a coach familiar with this software makes it a valuable training tool.

Buying a power meter for ones bike(s) is also an alternative to benefit from this valuable training tool. Unfortunately, this relative new instrument which is just becoming more familiar in Australia, is of a somewhat prohibitive price at the moment, with the accurate and reliable units, such as Ergomo and SRM, in the $2000 and above range, at the moment.

Having coached and advised athletes in the above disciplines since 2002, My coaching ethic and philosophy is based on a quality over quantity and accurate with accurate, pertinent advise and personal attention to each athlete. My goal is to create the conditions that will bring out the optimal performance of each individual athlete. To date, I am proud and humbled by my 100% record.
